Background
As of 2023, Wanda Cinema Line has 715 cinemas and 6,110 screens in China. Wanda chose CineUnion as the only appointed partner to upgrade 4,000+ screens of Christie Series 2 (S2) projectors with xenon lamps to RGB laser light source at 700+ cinemas.
Challenges
High power consumption: 4,000+ screens of Wanda Cinemas have adopted the Christie S2 projectors. The power consumption was as high as 80 million kWh.
Brightness loss and high cost: Requiring repeat xenon lamp purchase and replacement.
Annual failure rate of 0.05%: The cinema needs to regularly schedule maintenance work including lamp replacement and deep cleaning of the light engine caused by dust pollution result in an annual failure rate of 0.05%.
Results
Reduced power consumption by 50%: When the Laser Light upgrade of 4,000+ screens is completed, the estimated annual power savings will be reduced from 80 million kWh to as low as 42 million kWh.
Improved projection brightness moviegoer satisfaction: The Laser Light offers a higher projection quality standard that projection brightness is now up to 2-3 times brighter than a xenon lamp.
Increased revenue: After the Laser Light Upgrade, the Service team of Wanda Cinemas reported that the annual failure rate has dropped by 60% from 0.05% to 0.02%.
Savings up to USD 143 million: By installing dustproof boxes,
- Cleaning the optical path and the optical engine is not necessary.
- Projector light source lifetime has assured saving the new laser projector purchase cost.
